Starbucks Stop...

We were able to take Jacoby on a wheelchair ride in the hospital by ourselves for the first time today!  Destination Starbucks!  While it was a great trip, it was a bit emotional as well.  We all shed a few tears.  The days are packed with rehab appointments and meetings and we are all wiped out by the end of the day... especially Jacoby.  She had her first real shower since the accident today.  It was quite the process!  Continued thanks for all the support and encouragement by our local community and literally many throughout the US and the world.

     Go Team Jacoby!

Please no visitors until Saturday afternoon and Sunday.  We have learned that therapy during the week takes up the whole day and is pretty exhausting! Thank you for understanding.

A Better Day...

Jacoby had a pretty good day, today.  Her overall pain level has become easier to regulate, so she is able to focus more on rehab.  She was able to stay in the chair for about 3 hours today without the nauseous feeling that plagued her the last couple of days!  It's a mental roller coaster for her, but she is handling it like a champ.  Thanks to all for the cards filled with encouraging words.  Jacoby thoroughly enjoys reading them!

Reality Check...

Today we realized we have a daughter who has an accurate perspective on life...

Big thanks to our family doctor, Dr. Kevin Taggart, "The Maid Brigade", the Mariners Michael Saunders, and West Coast Elite Gymnastics from Arcadia, CA for their show of support!

Gym Sister Power!

Jacoby enjoyed a visit from several of her gym-mates and coaches today.  They shared lunch over pizza and had some good laughs.  Jacoby has expressed a lot of interest in coaching down at Roach Gymnastics and the visit only reinforced that desire.
The transition from the hospital to home life has been a bit exhausting to be honest with you, so continued prayers for the transition are much appreciated!
Jacoby received some more encouraging letters and care packages from several people, gyms, colleges (Auburn and Oklahoma), and a really cool letter and picture from SEAL Team 5 in Afghanistan!  Continued thanks for all the words of support.
God continues to stretch and strengthen us all through this trial.  We have met so many wonderful people and continue to trust in His purpose behind all of this...

First Full Day Of Rehab...

Jacoby had a busy first full day of rehab, filled with PT, OT, and TR.  Her biggest accomplishment of the day was making it into a wheelchair.  She was a bit nauseous but tolerated it well enough to head down the elevator three floors and to the Starbucks near the hospital entrance!  Of course, she was rewarded with a caramel frap, which actually seemed to help with the nausea.  The exciting part of this was that she had good blood pressure readings when we returned to her room.
Jacoby is receiving such encouragement from the letters she has received and wanted to send a big "THANK YOU" to everyone.  She made us read letters for about three hours today.  We made it through stacks from ECGA, Crystals, Grace, Garlands, and VEGA.  Next up is a huge collection received from all across the US!
In terms of her spinal cord injury, she has not regained any additional feeling at this time.  Please keep the prayers up!  We were reminded once again how blessed we are to have her with us as we ran into some old friends by chance... Cameron and Sarah Stewart are here with their 3 year old daughter who is in the fight of her life in the ICU after a heart surgery that took a turn for the worse.  Please keep this family in your prayers as well!

Jacoby's Sabbath...

"Sabbath": a day of religious observance and abstinence from work.
Jacoby's day was the purest form of Sabbath!  She spent the entire day sharing stories and laughter with her youth group, family, neighbors, and gymnastic sisters.

Please pray for Jacoby as she starts her first full day of physical and occupational therapy tomorrow.  We love her and we know she can do it!

A Touch of Christmas...

Sometimes there are not words to fully capture what we want to say... that is how we felt today.  Telling you we're proud of Jacoby doesn't come close to how we felt as we watched her throughout the day.
We started with therapy this morning.  Jacoby was sat up for the first time!  We know this doesn't seem like a big deal, but for spinal cord injuries, it's one of the first hurdles that must be overcome.  After laying down for one week solid, the body has to re-adjust blood pressure levels.
After therapy, Jacoby received flowers and a gift from one of her favorite gymnasts... Nastia Liukin!  What a special treat!  Jacoby just kept saying, "She has been so good to me and she doesn't even know me."
As we all visited about how amazing it would be to get flowers from Nastia, Jacoby's Aunt Heidi Sackett was busy at work making her room a "Christmas Delight".  She was surrounded with colorful stockings, hanging bulbs of every shape and size, wreaths, and a beautiful 7 ft. Christmas tree.
And what's a day without visitors!  Jacoby was able to share her day with some teammates and family.  A couple Seattle first responders delivered a stack of cards from VEGA and Sandy delivered a pile from Garlands and also a stack received from all across the US.  Adding these to the cards already received from other clubs in prior days, the pile keeps growing.  Jacoby loves to have us read the cards and receives great encouragement from them (not to mention us!).  Thanks to all!

Even with the challenges before us, we feel blessed beyond words.  We are thankful our daughter is surrounded by so many who love her and want to see her "walk on water" as badly as we do!

The new world of rehabilitation...

Today was D-Day!

Time to pack up camp and begin the new world of rehabilitation at Seattle Children's Hospital.  Jacoby had a wonderful first day visiting with family and friends; my Jacoby was back, if even it was for a short time.

After getting settle in at Children's Hospital President and CEO of USA Gymnastics Steve Spenny, who's from the Seattle area, was home for the holiday weekend stopped by to see Jacoby.  While he was here he got Nastia on the phone.  Nastia offered words of encouragement and support.

We discussed new goals, celebrated meeting new and old friends and once again remembered the power of faith, hope and love.

WITH GOD...ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!

Jacoby being sarinated by her sisters and cousins

Love,

Jason and Gretchen

Thanksgiving at Harborview...

With all of our family in town we chose to have our Thanksgiving dinner in the hospital cafeteria.  We set up the entire fort, being one of 12 children, you can imagine what an exciting party it was.  It was so funny, a lot of people thought it was something the hospital laid out and went through the line.  It was awesome!  Plenty to go around.

Jacoby is doing ok.  Still having flu symptoms but no fever.  Doctors are trying to tranfer her to Children's Hospital tomorrow.  She's eating better and got some breathing readings up to 75% of her target.  That is a 50% increase from where she started.  She had fewer meds today and was much more alert.  Actually starting a conversation about a song her school choir was learning that came on the radio.  She's much more vocal and is asking for things, mixed with times of silent relfection.  Gretchen has been amazing at motivating her with encouraging words and stories.

Olympians tweet and facebook for Jacoby...

 Go to Jacoby's website:

Jacoby with teammate Rachel
A special thank you to Nastia, Ali and Gabby for tweeting your support and keeping Jacoby in your thoughts and prayers!

We are still at Harborview this evening due to Jacoby coming down with a low grade fever.  She is eating better, her throat is feeling better and she is becoming more verbal.  Blood test results should be back tomorrow.  Due to the delay with the fever and risk of infection, please NO VISITORS until she is transferred to Children's Hospital.

Thank you once again for all of your support, cards and well wishes.  Because she was more alert today were able to begin reading them to her.

One of her former teammates raised $240 with a coffee can and her 9 year old smile.  When we told Jacoby the story it brought a huge smile to her face!

Ready for rehab...

Go to Jacoby's website:

Jacoby had a very postitive and restful day including a visit from her teammate Rachel who is home from college.  They removed the IV and heavy narcotics.  She moved through this first phase relatively quickly in large part, we believe, because of how healthy and fit she is. The plan is that she will be tranferred to Children's hospital on Wednesday.

Thank you again for all of your support and prayers!

Update...

Overall Jacoby had a good day.  Although she is still struggling emotionally, physically she showed progress.  The doctors were pleased with her recovery from surgery.  She had the drainage tubes removed from the surgical sight.  She was able to eat and drink for the first time.  We got two smiles from her today.  Both were because of her siblings and cousins.  She was in good spirits by the end of the night.

A special thank you to Sandy of Emerald City Gymnastics who dropped of the first batch of get well cards and donations from ECGA.  Over $2800 so far from her massive get well card campaign.

Community support overwhelms the family...

From the Miles family...

The surgery was successful.  We will continue to wait for the swelling to go down and pray for her to regain more feeling.  Today was difficult for her emotionally as the reality of the situation began to set in.  We are overwhelmed and very grateful for the outpouring of support from the community.  We feel so blessed.

Thank you all for the prayers, get well wishes, cards and donations!

The most critical 24 hours... please continue to pray

Reminder... she is not ready for visitors yet and please hold off on the flowers for now because she can't have them in her room.

UPDATE...

The next 24 hours are the most critical for Jacoby.  Please pray for the swelling to go down, the spinal chord to heal and for her body to regain feeling.

Thank you for your prayers.

WITH GOD... ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! There is ALWAYS hope...

GET WELL JACOBY
from just a few of your gym sisters...

Your prayers are working,.. keep them coming!

Update from Gretchen...

Jacoby just got out of surgery... the surgery went very well.

The Dr's are very hopeful that she will regain feeling in her arms again.  They found that the spinal chord had been completely pinched off but NOT SEVERED!  PRAISE GOD!!!  Although the Dr said using her legs again would be in the "miracle category", we are praying for and believing she can make a full recovery - she is a STRONG girl!

They are planning to move her to Good Sam's in Puyalup where she will begin recovery.

WITH GOD... ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!  There is ALWAYS hope...

There are several fundraisers in the works.  We will have more information available on how you can help in the next several hours.

Thank you again for all of your prayers... keep them coming!

Continued prayers...

This evening Jacoby was practicing her double back dismount off the high bar into the pit.  She opened prematurely, stating she "got lost", before her 2nd flip was complete and landed on her neck on an 8 inch mat.  The paramedics were called and she was taken to St. Josephs Hospital in Tacoma where a CAT scan showed her C4 vertebrae had dislocated sitting slightly in front of her C5. She is paralyzed from the mid chest down.  She was taken to Harborview for surgery.  They will know more in the next 2-3 days.

Jacoby and her family have shown incredible strength during this most difficult time.  Jacoby didn't shed even one tear and was more concerned about her teammates crying than she was for herself.  The family will need our help and support in the coming days, weeks and months.   The gym will be organizing meals for the family beginning tomorrow, please see the front desk to sign up.

Feel free to send get well messages to Jacoby and her family on this blog.  Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

They have asked that there be no visitors at this time.

The blog will be updated as more information is available.
